Letter to Congress in Support for FIRST Act

Hispanic Federation is proud to join the National Immigrant Justice Center and nearly 200 other organizations in a letter to Congress endorsing the Federal Immigrant Release for Safety and Security Together (FIRST) Act. It is important to limit ICE's interior enforcement activity, mandate dramatic reductions in ICE detention levels, and ensure basic protections for those currently detained during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Migrant Protection Protocols Raise Severe Access to Counsel Concerns

Hispanic Federation joined the Southern Poverty Law Center, the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild, and 45 other organizations in urging the Department of Homeland Security and the Executive Office of Immigration Review to address the denial of access to counsel to asylum seekers under the "Remain in Mexico" policy. Full and fair trials of asylum cases are not possible without access to legal representation.

Suspend Immigration Enforcement Activities during Census 2020

Hispanic Federation joined the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights and multiple organizations in requesting that all immigration enforcement activities and operations of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) be completely and immediately suspended in order to promote an inclusive and accurate count of this country's population during Census 2020.

Congress Must Pass a Second, More Inclusive COVID-19 Relief Package

Hispanic Federation sent a letter to both House and Senate leadership urging the Congress to pass a CARES Act 2 relief bill that secures the health and safety for all people, regardless of immigration status or geographic location, and makes assistance available for the duration of the economic downturn. While the CARES Act was a significant first step, millions of Latinos in the U.S. and Puerto Rico were left out of key provisions of legislation passed to address the impacts of the coronavirus.

A Call for the Small Business Administration to Release Data

Hispanic Federations supports Independent Sector in asking the Small Business Administration to release data detailing the distribution of loans to nonprofit and for-profit entities. The data would provide the information needed to uncover the most pressing and immediate needs for the nonprofits during the coronavirus crisis.

Hispanic Federation joins Church World Service and 150 other refugee resettlement, faith, and other humanitarian and human rights to include dedicated resources for our refugee and immigrant neighbors and ensure that all community members are able to mitigate risks to their vulnerability to COVID-19. This is not just an immigration issues – it is a public health necessity.

Letter to the President Asking to Fully Invoke the Defense Production Act

Hispanic Federation urges the President to fully invoke the Defense Production Act in effort to address the COVID-19 pandemic and specifically promote domestic pharmaceutical and medical supply production in Puerto Rico where 49 FDA-approved plants are already in operation.

Suspend All HUD Non-Emergency Rule-making

Hispanic Federation joins National Low Income Housing Coalition, National Women's Law Center, and 101 other organizations in urging the Department of Housing and Urban Development to suspend all non-emergency rulemaking until at least 30 days after the national emergency declared on March 13, 2020 has ended. Making changes to regulations would result in fewer people receiving housing assistance and undermining civil rights protections would exacerbate the current public health crisis.

No Additional Waivers Under The IDEA or the Rehabilitation Act

Hispanic Federation joins more than 300 national, state, and local organizations in opposing any additional waivers under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as federal education laws that protect civil rights for students with disabilities could be undermined.

Remove Barriers for Health Insurance Enrollment for Low-Income Older Adults in COVID-19 Pandemic

Hispanic Federation is proud to join Justice in Aging and other organizations in calling for the Department of Health and Human Services to take action to remove barriers and to streamline enrollment in health insurance coverage for low-income older adults and people with disabilities who are at highest risk of serious illness and death from COVID-19.
