Hispanic Federation will continue to work with its nationwide network of over 750 partners to protect the rights of vulnerable members of the Latino community
New York, NY – Over the past few months the Hispanic Federation, through the La Voz de Mi Gente campaign, reached out to over 2 million voters across 13 states. This campaign included partnerships with 52 trusted Latino organizations that worked on the ground to engage with Latino voters and increased Latino voter participation in the 2024 election. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, in response to election day.
“Latinos have proven, once again, that our vote is the deciding factor in national elections. Because of our collective effort, we saw a record number of Latino voters participate in the 2024 election. Through our La Voz de Mi Gente campaign, we reached out to over 2 million voters and worked with 52 organizations on the ground to connect directly with voters. While we celebrate this record number of voter turnout, we also call on candidates and political parties to engage our community at the early stages of the campaign season to address the issues that are top of mind for most voters. We would also be remiss if we did not acknowledge the role that disparaging remarks played in the sense of urgency of Latino voters.
While it is too early to say the degree to which Latinos, and Puerto Ricans specifically, pushed back after Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden, it is a fact that calling Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage” infuriated voters and motivated them to move quickly to the polls in the final week of the elections. Attacks on our communities, both Puerto Rican and the broader Latino community, are not acceptable in any situation, and we will continue to push back whenever our communities are vilified or targeted. As more data is made available and we get a more accurate portrait of the Latino vote, we must avoid misleading headlines about the aspirations and motivations of Latino voters. Ultimately, it is a campaign’s responsibility to respond to address the concerns of voters.
We know that the incoming administration has a roadmap of policy measures that will be implemented over the next couple of years, many of which threaten the safety and well-being of our communities. Hispanic Federation has a track record of delivering and advocating for Latino communities in the areas of health programs, economic empowerment, immigration, and many other issues that are vital to the Latino community. Some of our work may run in contrast to agendas that will come from the new administration, but we will remain true to our commitment of delivering fairness and equity for our communities. I, along with the team at Hispanic Federation, will continue to stand with Latino communities across the country to protect, demand, denounce, and mobilize on behalf of the interest of Latinos. We will work with our national network of over 750 partner organizations to make sure our communities have the resources and expertise to continue to strengthen the Latino community and address the concerns of our community.”
