Hispanic Federation Condemns the Recent Political Violence in Pennsylvania and Reaffirms Commitment To Democracy Amidst Adversity

Type(s): Press Release

Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, issued the following statement:

“Over the last three days our nation’s and the world’s discourse has been dominated by the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, and rightfully so. This shocking and vile act of political violence resulted in needless death and injuries at an event that aimed to advance the most vital institution of our country – participatory democracy. That the perpetrator failed at their primary objective brings only marginal relief to those of us at the Hispanic Federation, and all who revere our democratic process. That is not how democracy works, and that is not how our country works.

Where our recent Independence Day celebrations reminded us all of the price and value of participatory politics, the actions of July 13 are a heinous demonstration that there are some who would declare themselves above democracy and attempt to settle political processes through violence. Our history demonstrates time and again that participatory democracy makes demands upon all of us to reject the selfish and heinous actions of a few.

Our democracy thrives with active participation in free and fair elections. To that end, Hispanic Federation continues our commitment to civic engagement trainings, voter registration and community education.

We must constantly work toward a body politic that is respectful, constructive, and safe for engagement. The pursuit of a more perfect union is one of eternal striving, and we at the Hispanic Federation are prepared to conduct the restorative work required to mend and strengthen our collective democracy.”
