Latinos For A Better Future Launches to Ensure Passage of Latino Priorities in the Build Back Better Agenda

WASHINGTON — Today, the Hispanic Federation, Latino Victory Project, UnidosUS Action Fund, Mi Familia Vota, Green Latinos, and the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators launch Latinos For A Better Future, an initiative dedicated to ensure passage of Build Back Better and the inclusion of key Latino priorities.

The growth of the Latino population and electorate is reshaping U.S. politics and the democratic process. With projections indicating Latinos will make up close to 30% of the U.S. population by 2050, our country’s future success and economic growth rests largely on the economic, social, and civic success of all Latino communities, including immigrants. Latinos for a Better Future will work hard to ensure that the values and priorities of Latino communities are included and reflected in this historic reshaping of our public policy.

The President's Build Back Better agenda includes many of the priorities that, as community leaders, we have been fighting for:

creating good-paying, green jobs

lowering costs for working families

increasing access to healthcare for many

addressing climate change

ensuring access to quality education

fair treatment of immigrants and essential workers

The Build Back Better agenda will help American Latino families succeed in the 21st century, creating funding for critical programs across the country. The Latinos For A Better Future Coalition, a group of Latino leaders and non-partisan national organizations, will work to ensure the passage of crucial legislation that supports progress for Latino communities across the nation, including those in Puerto Rico.

Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, said, “Latinos in the states and Puerto Rico have made enormous, historical contributions to the U.S.; however, pressing challenges continue to exist for our families, particularly in the areas of healthcare, immigration, education, climate change, jobs, and the economy. Collectively, we will work to ensure that Congress acts on these critical issues and priorities in the legislation supporting the Build Back Better Agenda.” Mark Magaña, President of GreenLatinos, said, “Congress must move the country toward achieving a 100% clean, renewable energy while cutting carbon pollution in half by 2030. This will drive innovation, job creation, and growth while tackling the climate crisis and curbing the dangerous pollution poisoning our communities. We also must deliver at least 40% of investment benefits to communities of color and low-income communities that have historically borne the brunt of fossil fuel pollution. We need to pass a plan to build back better that includes everyone in its benefits.”

We must unite to ensure these priorities are included in a final bill and delivered to President Biden’s desk.”

It has never been more critically important for Congress to create good-paying jobs, lower costs for working families to close the Medicaid coverage gap, address climate change, and full inclusion of immigrants in our systems. Kenneth Romero, Executive Director of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL), said, “Childcare for two kids costs more than most Hispanic working moms earn. One in four Hispanics lacks broadband. The 10 most traveled bridges in poor condition in the U.S. are in heavily Hispanic areas. Congress must pass these priorities addressed in the infrastructure and budget bills and provide cost-of-living adjustments for federal programs.”

“Congress has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform the lives of tens of millions of Americans, including the nation’s growing Latino community, which now totals nearly 62 million people, many of whom are struggling every day to make ends meet. No other community stands to benefit more from the Build Back Better Agenda than Latino workers and their families,” said Rafael Collazo, Executive Director of UnidosUS Action Fund.
