Hispanic Federation Statement on the Appointment of Félix Matos Rodríguez as the Eighth Chancellor of the City University of New York

NEW YORK, NY — Hispanic Federation President José Calderón issued the following statement regarding the appointment of Félix Matos Rodríguez as the first Latino chancellor of the City University of New York:

“As a fellow CUNY alumna, I commend the Board of Trustees for choosing Félix Matos Rodríguez as their next Chancellor. Félix is a proven Latino leader and public servant who has worked hard to ensure the opportunity of a college education remains accessible and affordable to all students, regardless of their background or income. We are excited to see Felix bring that commitment to CUNY, which currently provides a low-cost yet high-quality education to more than 275,000 students, majority of whom are from the Latino community.”

“At Hispanic Federation, we believe that expanding people’s access to higher education is the single greatest investment we can make in our future. With the Latino population in New York only continuing to grow, it’s important for CUNY to support programs and initiatives that meet the needs of Latinos, including their enrollment and completion of a college program. Given Félix’s recent track record at both Queens College and Hostos Community College, we remain confident that educational opportunities for Latino students in New York will increase under his leadership, and enrollment, retention and graduation rates will continue to soar.”
