On April 20th the Hispanic Federation will host its Annual Gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The Federation’s benefit event raises funds to support over 100 Latino community-based organizations in 16 states and programs and initiatives that uplift hundreds of thousands of children and families throughout the nation. But the Gala is not only important because of the vital causes it supports. It’s also a celebration of the people and organizations that make the Latino community stronger.

Take as an example this year's legendary Legacy Award honorees: Emilio and Gloria Estefan. For decades, they have not only been pioneers in the music industry, but advocates for the Latino community. The Estefans build storied careers integrating Latin sounds into pop music. This passionate vision led to a unique blend of musical styles – and the creation of art that has withstood the test of time.

“The theme of this year’s gala is unity,” said Hispanic Federation President José Calderón. “Over the course of their long careers as musicians, composers, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, Gloria and Emilio Estefan have embodied the concept of unity as a community value. They have invested in South Florida, have sought to expand the universe for Latin music in the United States, and have always spoken out on behalf of human rights both in Latin America and here in the United States. They represent the sort of artistic commitment to community that we hope other artists will emulate and we take great pleasure in welcoming them to New York as our Legacy Award winners for 2017.”
