Studies have shown that throughout the school year, students make similar progress in their learning. However, the disadvantage and gap in reading in particular comes over the summer: the difference between those students who read over the summer and those who don’t can have a lasting impacting on a child’s achievements in schooling. These gaps disproportionately affect the country’s black and Latino students.
Year-round we work to decrease achievement gaps Pre-K through 12 via our Pathways to Academic Success workshops. Through Pathways, we equip parents with the tools and resources to continue to educate their children at home.
It’s important that our work continues throughout the summer. That's why we're hosting Education Summerfest, in partnership with Univision and New York City Council Member Julissa Ferreras. Through an afternoon of fun-filled activities, students and parents will engage in workshops such as film production and the basics of coding that will provide fun-filled opportunities learning.
“We’re committed to closing the achievement gap for Latino students across the country, and so much of that depends on the family. If children are not learning while they’re home for the summer, they will not be able to hit the ground running come Fall,” said Jose Calderon, President of the Hispanic Federation. “Through events like Education Summerfest, we’re combining the fun and games children look forward to in the summertime with educational topics, which are necessary for their growth and academic achievement.”
