Hispanic Federation’s Comment on President Trump’s Initial Executive Orders
Washington, D.C. – President Trump’s first day in office produced numerous executive actions which have concerning implications for the Latino community. Below is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, in response to President Trump’s executive actions:
“It is alarming to see how much President Trump’s day one executive actions ignore the rule of law and threaten the livelihood of all Americans. These actions, especially several executive orders, disregard the core pillars of governance.
- By producing an executive order to cancel birthright citizenship, President Trump has unilaterally taken unlawful action in an attempt to eradicate a right enshrined by the US Constitution that can only be changed through an official act of Congress and the support of two-thirds of state legislatures.
- Trump’s first day executive order to officially recognize only two sexes (male and female) is a blatant disregard for one’s civil rights and will only hurt LGBTQ+ individuals and families across the country.
- At a time when thousands of Americans are rebuilding their homes and communities destroyed by unprecedented natural disasters due to climate change, President Trump rolled back environmental and climate regulations.
- President Trump pardoned all protesters who broke into the US Capitol on January 6th – individuals who caused injuries, death and destruction at our nation’s capital – sending a clear signal that certain individuals who commit crimes in President Trump’s name can ignore the rule of law and not be held accountable.
We are confident that many of these executive actions will be challenged in court and will not be implemented. However, the current anti-immigrant, anti-LGBTQ, anti-diversity rhetoric poses a threat to all people across the country and does nothing to uplift struggling Americans.
Our pre- and post-election polling of the Latino community was clear that Latino voters prioritized economic issues and opposed most of the other policies supported by President Trump such as the separation of families, forced deportations, and rolling back protections for the most vulnerable communities.
Yet, the policies and actions that President Trump appears to be prioritizing at the start of his administration will derail the economy and create more hardship for communities that have been struggling for years. It is essential that President Trump remember the priorities of voters and focus on addressing those concerns rather than vilifying and destroying communities.”
