Parliamentarian Deals Another Setback to Immigrants – But It’s Not the End of the Fight

Yesterday’s decision by the Senate Parliamentarian delivered another blow in denying Democrat’s latest attempts to pass a path to citizenship for many undocumented immigrants by updating a decades-old immigration registry as part of the budget reconciliation package. The following is a statement from Frankie Miranda, President and CEO of Hispanic Federation, regarding the decision:

“This decision is the latest setback to overhauling our broken immigration system as part of the budget reconciliation process. The majority of American voters support a pathway to citizenship and lasting protections for immigrants. Yet, the Parliamentarian continues to yield her unelected power to block changes that could improve the lives of countless families, workers, and young people across the country. We are not done! The fight for a just immigration system is not over.

The Parliamentarian’s decision on citizenship is wrong - but it cannot be the final word. Democrats must continue to fight for immigrants and find a path forward. The United States is on the precipice of passing a once-in-a-generation investment in care, climate, jobs, and education - and it must include citizenship. We cannot build back better without including immigrants.

We will not stop fighting for a pathway to citizenship and other overdue changes to our immigration system. Anti-immigrant advocates in Congress can’t have it both ways: they can’t complain about people living here without status and then stymie efforts to create legal avenues to regularize their status. We urge Congress to continue pursuing all avenues available to create a pathway to citizenship for the immigrants who make our communities better and our country stronger. We expect lawmakers to deliver on their promise and keep fighting to create a welcoming America for all.”
