Oprah Winfrey Commits $2 million to Puerto Rico’s Revitalization Efforts and Arts Community

Commitment Consists of $1 Million Donation to Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to Support Puerto Rico and $1 Million Donation to Flamboyan Arts Fund

New York, NY – Today, the Hispanic Federation (HF) and the Flamboyan Arts Fund announced a $2 million commitment from global media leader and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey to aid in the revitalization of Puerto Rico. Winfrey’s two-part financial commitment consists of a $1 million donation to the Hispanic Federation’s UNIDOS Disaster Relief & Recovery Program to Support Puerto Rico to help the organization continue to develop and implement long-term needs, along with a $1 million donation to the Flamboyan Arts Fund to simultaneously ensure that the island’s rich heritage of arts, culture and creative development are not lost forever.

“I was so moved by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s commitment to bring HAMILTON to Puerto Rico and support the community that served him growing up that I wanted to join in the revitalization efforts of an island so rich in culture, beauty and heritage,” said Winfrey. “The needs of Puerto Rico and our fellow American citizens following the tragic hurricanes are still very real, and the work that has already been done by the Hispanic Federation, Flamboyan Arts Fund and other organizations on and off the island is long from over.”

The Flamboyan Arts Fund, created through the partnership of award-winning composer, lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, his family, HAMILTON, and the Flamboyan Foundation, to preserve, amplify, and sustain the arts in Puerto Rico. The fund supports all facets of the arts community including music, theater, visual arts, dance, literature, and youth arts education to ensure that the arts and culture continue to flourish during the rebuilding of Puerto Rico. HAMILTON’s 23-performance run, with Lin-Manuel Miranda reprising his leading role from January 11-27, 2019 at the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré theater in San Juan, was a fundraising effort for the Flamboyan Arts Fund that is estimated to raise $15 million for artists and arts institutions on the island.
