Hispanic Federation Strongly Supports Nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas

New York -- Today, Hispanic Federation, one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to supporting and empowering the Latino community, issued the following statement on President-elect Joe Biden’s nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas. Hispanic Federation President, Frankie Miranda said:

“The nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas to become his secretary of the Department of Homeland security, is an early indication that President-elect Joe Biden intends to follow through on his promise to build a Cabinet which reflects the diversity of our nation and is prepared to immediately tackle the biggest problems we face.

As the first immigrant and Latino to lead this critical agency, Mr. Mayorkas will play a key role in carrying out President-elect Biden’s immigration policies, including rescinding President Trump’s travel ban on Muslim majority countries, ending family separation at the border, and restoring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)—which he helped implement as Deputy Secretary of DHS during the Obama Administration.

At a time when our nation is in the midst of a deadly pandemic, it is reassuring that President-elect Biden would select someone with years of experience in disaster mitigation, relief, and preparedness—someone who has broad support and will be prepared to lead on day one.

For the last four years, Hispanic Federation and our partners, have been forced to respond to the Trump Administration’s cruel actions at the border, racist immigration policies, and failures to provide Black and Brown communities with adequate support after devastating natural disasters in Puerto Rico and the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to working with someone who wants to end the chaos and dysfunction and rebuild DHS into a credible agency once again.

As an organization committed to ensuring Latinos in America have equal access to all this nation has to offer, Hispanic Federation strongly supports the nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas. We encourage every United States Senator to not only consider Mr. Mayorkas’ impressive resume and vast experience, but to see in him the promise of our nation where an immigrant seeking refuge can rise to the highest levels of service to America.”
