HF Statement on Governor Cuomo’s Immigration Pardons

December 27, 2017 (New York, NY) – Earlier today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo issued pardons to 18 individuals who are facing deportations or other immigration-related challenges, in addition to granting clemency to an additional 43 individuals. Hispanic Federation’s President José Calderón issued the following statement:

“New York and Governor Cuomo continue to lead the way in protecting immigrants and their families, setting the example for showing compassion and humanity for people who need it. The 18 people who received pardons are part of our New York community, and we are grateful to Governor Cuomo for granting them clemency. These individuals paid their debt to society and are public health educators, nurses, caregivers, parents, community board members and small business owners. They are vital contributors to our society, our state, our city, and to their families and communities.

Today’s action by Governor Cuomo is even more important given the federal government’s continued targeting of immigrants for deportation and its pursuit of cruel policies that tear apart families and communities. New York has demonstrated yet again that we are a state and city that supports, welcomes and protects immigrants.”
