August 20, 2020 (New York) -- Hispanic Federation President Frankie Miranda issued the following statement on comments allegedly made by President Trump regarding Puerto Rico:

“The statements made yesterday by former U.S. Department of Homeland Security official Miles Taylor regarding President Trump’s views about Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans were unsurprising. While this is Mr. Taylor’s personal account about the President’s personal prejudices, the truth is that President Trump’s words and actions have long made his contempt for Puerto Rico and its U.S. citizen residents obvious. No President in the recent history of the United States has been more callously hostile to the people of Puerto Rico.”

“Ever since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, this President has given a masterclass on his own ineptness and inability to manage an emergency – and his unwillingness to comfort and support Americans in need. For the past three years, Puerto Ricans have seen no effective leadership from this President, realizing that his personal biases and shortcomings would prevent any semblance of that happening. The message from the White House has been loud and clear: you are on your own, fend for yourself. It is a painful reality that Americans from coast to coast have had to come to grips with this year.”
