Hispanic Federation Celebrates U.S. Supreme Court Rejection of Trump’s Plan to End DACA

Court ruled that Trump efforts to hurt DACA recipients and immigrant families were “arbitrary and capricious”

WASHINGTON, DC
—By a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court found that President Trump’s attempt to end the successful Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was “arbitrary and capricious.” The DACA program provides certain individuals brought to the US as youth the opportunity to reside and work legally in this country without fear of deportation. Today’s decision removes the immediate threat of deportation for about 700,000 DACA permit holders and their families and allows new applications to proceed.

The high court’s ruling was handed down almost eight years after the creation of DACA, which exists because of the successful mobilization by immigrant youth following years of failure on the part of Congress to reform our broken immigration system.

Since the beginning of the program, Hispanic Federation has provided hundreds of DACA applicants and undocumented students grants for application filing fees , tuition, books and food. From the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, HF has expanded its efforts to ensure food security for undocumented students.

Frankie Miranda, Hispanic Federation President stated:

“This is a profoundly joyful day. For years, DACA recipients have lived in fear that Trump would carry out his threat to strip their protections and deport them and their families after failed attempts at using them as bargaining chips to advance more harms against immigrant communities. It would be highly immoral for the Trump Administration to continue efforts to end DACA and cause further instability during a time when the country is already reeling from the mishandling of a health crisis.

“As people are marching throughout our nation calling for racial equity and justice, our Courts are demonstrating the profound importance of having the ability to limit the power of other branches of government. We are all working in unison to do what is morally right and protect our sense of humanity in these trying times.

“This week, the Supreme Court made the correct decision in two incredibly important cases affecting our communities. However, we cannot assume that President Trump and his administration will end their politics of hate, division, and cruelty. It is more important than ever to ensure as many voters as possible can safely cast their votes in November to elect representatives that fight to protect all of us.

“We call on the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate to immediately secure the lives and livelihoods of DACA recipients and their families by passing and sending to the President for his signature, H.R.6, the American Dream and Promise Act, which was passed by the House more than nine months ago. This bill provides a path to citizenship for Dreamers, a long-term solution consistently supported by a wide margin of the American public.

“We congratulate young immigrants who led the way to defend the program - in the streets and the courts - and who continue fighting to protect our communities from vicious attacks by the Trump administration. We stand together in our commitment to ensure that all immigrants know that their ‘Home Is Here.’”
